The coupled protons are usually close to one another because they are separated by few bonds, up to four.
However, it can happen that protons farther away in bonds lay close because of a given molecular configuration and/or conformation.
Those situations can be revealed by 2D H/H NOESY or ROESY spectra.
Those experiments are based on NOE phenomenon (Nuclear Overhauser Effect) whose explanation exceeds the scope of this course.
